Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth Sensitivity
This is one of the most common dental issue faced by us globally. Tooth Sensitivity or as it is medically known as dentin hypersensitivity impacts the tooth or the areas which are visible. The reason why we feel sensitivity on our teeth is because of the enamel getting thinner by the attack of acidic food and soda drinks. When enamel gets eroded, dentin(the underlying surface) is exposed. So whenever we drink something cold or hot it directly attacks the veins hereby giving us a terrible sensation. It should be noted that tooth sensitivity affects 57 percent of people globally.
Symptoms and Causes of Tooth Sensitivity
As the name suggests, Tooth Sensitivity means feeling some sort of sensitiveness in your teeth while you consume something hot or cold. You will feel a pinching pain in your teeth when you consume these eatables however you do not have to worry about anything as it is not a permanent condition.
Tooth Sensitivity can be caused because of any of the following reasons:
- If you have been using hard bristled toothbrush then the enamel will be worn out.
- Enamel Erosion because of acidic food.
- Tooth Erosion due to gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Your root being exposed due to receding gums.
Diagnosis of Tooth Sensitivity
The best treatment is keeping up with the dental hygiene. Brush twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush. This will work two ways – first you will avoid enamel erosion and secondly there won’t be any receding gums. Consult your dentist so that he/she can guide you through the correct brushing technique. They will also let you know if at all there is any kind of deformity in your teeth. Brushing twice a day followed by flossing is one of the best ways to avoid being affected by this dental condition. Furthermore you need to check on your diet as well. Make sure you do not consume acidic foods and drink too much soda.
Treatment of Tooth Sensitivity
Your dentist will be recommending you toothpaste which will reduce sensitivity but at the same time they will suggest you some sort of fluoride gel or a fluoride rinse. They might also suggest you toothpaste which has higher levels of fluoride and especially those which will make your teeth less sensitive. This condition should be addressed as soon as possible because eventually it will lead to other dental conditions such as
- Dental Caries
- A cracked or chipped teeth
- Bruxism
- Leakage along the restorations
- Tooth Bleaching.
So take good care of your teeth and stay healthy.
