Gum Disease Treatment – Surgical and Non Surgical
Gum Disease
Gum Disease is one of the most common disease which we suffer from. The reason why we end up suffering from this disease is because of the erratic and unhealthy eating habit and non compliance of proper brushing habit.
There are multiple treatment options available to cure Gum Disease. However it must be kept in mind that the treatment depends upon the level of disease, how well has your body responded to earlier treatment and your overall health. There two types of treatment that you can undertake – Surgical and Non Surgical. These treatment help in controlling bacterial growth to restore the supportive tissues.
Non Surgical Treatment of Gum Disease
Come let us take a look at the non surgical option for treating this problem
- Dental Cleaning: This treatment procedure involves a visit to your dentist and cleaning / removing of plaque and tartar. Tartar is that stubborn form of plaque which forms on the tooth surface and is really hard to remove. Plaque and Tartar form above and below the gum line which results in Gum Disease. Your dentist will recommend cleaning your tooth twice a year.
- Scaling and root planing: This is an advanced version of non surgical cleaning. As per this procedure anesthesia is used and plaque and tartar are removed from above and below the gum line. So the scraping procedure is called as Scaling and the rough spots are made smooth called as Planing. However this procedure is carried out only if your treating dentist finds out that your teeth has calculus (a stubborn form of tartar).
Surgical Treatment for Gum Disease
At times when non surgical treatment does not work we need to undergo surgical treatment. Few of the most common surgical treatment procedures are listed below:
- Flap Surgery: As per this surgery the tartar is removed by lifting the gums backwards. Once the tartar is removed the gum is placed back so as to fit snugly with the tooth. The advantage of this procedure is that it decreases the spacing between the tooth and gum thereby reducing the chances of further damage.
- Bone Graft: During this procedure either bone from your own body or a synthetic bone or bone from a dead body is taken to replace the the bone which has disintegrated due to the gum disease. This procedure helps in regrowth of the bone and also improves the stability of the teeth.
- Soft Tissue Graft: This is a procedure to fill in the places where gums have been pulled back.
- Guided Tissue Regeneration: This procedure is performed when the supporting bone gets destroyed because of the Gum Disease. This procedure is known to enhance the gum tissue and bone growth.
- Bone Surgery: Bone loss will result in crater formation and this procedure will help out in smoothing the craters which have been formed due to the disease. The bone surgery is very fruitful as it stops the growth of bacteria.
Conclusion
Gum Disease is one of the most common diseases prevalent worldwide. The best way to stay away from this disease is by brushing properly and eating healthy diet followed by visiting your dentist twice in a year.
