The reason is that whenever you suffer from tooth loss then dental implants are the last resort to give your teeth the desired shape. However before discussing the advantages or disadvantages let us first understand that what exactly are Dental Implants.

To keep it concise a dental implant is a replacement for your tooth root. It is replacement of that part of your tooth which is hidden just under the gums. You can compare your tooth to an iceberg because what you see from the above is nothing as compared to what lies below the gums. Generally dental implants won’t be really big in size. The reason being that they are slightly fat than the usual teeth. Now because dental implants are fatter than the normal tooth hence they have a larger surface area.

- A single tooth can be replaced without the need of affecting the rest of the neighboring teeth. What happens in dental bridge is that the neighboring teeth has to be trimmed down a bit and this need not be done when getting dental implants.
- It is an artificial tooth so works like that.
- You will have no problem in gobbling your favorite food (no matter how hard it is). Once the dental implant is fitted your dentist will fix a dental implant crown which makes it easier to chew on anything.
- Dental Implant is used to support: single tooth, multiple tooth on a single implant a single tooth, two teeth on one implant, a bridge of three or four teeth on two implants, or even “dental implant dentures”.
With that being said let us now take a look at the disadvantages of dental implants
- The biggest disadvantage is that it too costly. It is perhaps one of the most expensive way of replacing tooth. To put it across in simple terms this treatment is twice as expensive as fixed bridge.
- There is a slight discomfort while undergoing the entire procedure.
- It gets really serious if at all there is any complications related to dental implants. In case of some serious complication the implant might have to be removed.
- This procedure doesn’t end in just one sitting. You should be ready to visit your dentist time and again. The appointment might be for surgery or just to check how they are functioning.
These dental appliances can work wonders to your teeth. However it is advisable to discuss the pros and cons with your dentist so that he can explain to you the entire procedure in detail.
